Types of Western Saddles:
There are many different types of Western saddles. Some western saddles are made for simply general western riding. Other western saddles are made to give more freedom to the horse or more comfort and security to the rider.
The differences in a western saddle could include it width of the swells, the height of the cantle, the depth of the seat, where the stirrups are placed, the type of rigging used. All these elements depend on what the saddle will be used for — roping, barrel racing, pleasure riding, etc.
Western Cutting Saddle: Usually has wide swells, a high cantly and a deep seat. This allows the rider to feel more secure on the horse.
Western Roping Saddle: Usually has no swells and a low cantle. This allows the rider to dismount the horse fast, even while the horse is in motion, so they can “rope” a calf.
Western Barrel racing saddle: This saddle is usually lightweight with wide swells and high cantle. This allows the rider to stay seated while the horse takes sharp turns (around barrels) and when the horse makes fast sprints.
Western Endurance saddle: The endurance saddle is usually lightweight and many times does not have a “horn”. Many times the stirups are found more forward than other western saddles. This allows the rider to dismount while the horse may still be moving. The ultimate goal of the endurance saddle is for longer rides at fast paces or speeds.
Western Trail saddle: The trail saddle is designed for comfort for the rider as well as the horse. The saddle usually has a good padded seat.
Western Show saddle: A show saddle usually has more leather tooling and generous decorations of silver, etc. Specialized show saddles are found in roping, cutting and other areas of Western Riding.
